Whoever thinks cyclo-cross riders are pussies: brace for impact. In preparation of The Koppenberg Cross, the toughest climbing course on the cyclo-cross agenda, Bingoal surprised their two top riders with a daring challenge. A normal cyclo-cross trail consists of grass, mud, slopes and a small number of stairs. This track, created on the flanks of the “Wilhelminaberg” in Landgraaf, undoubtedly turned things around. After a run-up of 100 meters, a mud strip and a bridge, Belgian champ Laurens Sweeck and ex-world champ Michael Vanthourenhout faced a dazzling 508 stairs. The finish line positioned 225 meters higher at the top of the mountain. Contrary to the challenge, which became the talk of the town, both athletes were too much out of breath to even talk.
